Rangers fall to White Sox in rain-delayed

In his first at-bat Monday night, Tyler Flowers of the Chicago White Sox hit a drive that bounced off the top of the wall in right field and back into play. He had to stop at third base with a triple.

Texas Rangers third baseman Adian Beltre told Flowers it was too bad he didn’t get credit for the home run.

The catcher’s reply?

“I’m not too worried about it. I’ll probably hit another homer.”

He was a man of his word.

Flowers drove in three runs with his next at-bat and combined with rookie slugger Jose Abreu, who had two hits and two RBIs, to lead the White Sox to a rain-shortened 5-3 victory over the Rangers. The game was called in the bottom of the seventh inning following a nearly one-hour delay.

Rougned Odor had a two-run homer for the Rangers, who have now lost four straight.

Starting pitcher Nick Martinez allowed all five runs and eight hits in just over five innings and has lost his past seven decisions.

The Rangers will play the White Sox again tonight at 7 p.m.

Giants' Wilson to retire after only two seasons
Giants Running back David Wilson announced yesterday that, due to the condition of his neck and spine, on the suggestion of two separate doctors, he would be retiring after only two seasons in the NFL.

Wilson was placed on Injured Reserve on Monday, which means he will not play for the Giants this season.

In a team press release, Wilson said he didn’t want anybody to feel sorry for him or to pity him.

“I’ve lived my dream. A lot of people only get to dream their dream. I lived that dream. Now I have a chance to dream another dream and live that, too.”

Wilson injured his neck in a week 5 game against the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013 and missed the rest of the season. He had spinal fusion surgery in January and was not cleared for full contact until July 21, the day before the Giants’ first training camp practice.

He was injured during practice a week later and spent last week being examined by doctors before the decision was made.
