Hampton tells media drug trafficking stops on I-35 are on the rise

Criminal drug trafficking on I-35 is on the rise, this according to a KXII interview with Oklahoma Highway Patrol Troop F Captain Ronnie Hampton.

Last week, 23-year-old Jared Jahnel of Oklahoma City was stopped for speeding in Murray County just off of I-35. But during the stop, the trooper discovered criminal activities and happened to have a K-9 unit with him.

Upon investigating, he found 14 grams of Heroin in the vehicle and Jahnel was booked into Murray County Jail on Trafficking charges.

Jahnel is only the latest in an increasing number of drug-related stops on or near I-35 according to Hampton.

He said because of the close proximity between Oklahoma City and Dallas, I-35 is a pretty common thoroughfare for drug trafficking, but recently the number of stops in Garvin, Murray, Carter, Love, Johnston, Pontotoc and Marshall Counties has been on the rise, possibly due to troopers being more aware to red flags.

But it’s not just Troopers, according to the interview with Hampton. Other local law enforcement agencies are also on the lookout. Hampton told KXII that law enforcement are being taught to look beyond the traffic stop so they can catch more criminals like Jahnel before they get their product to its destination.
